Common Chronic Illnesses That Affect Kids

It’s a fact that all children experience some health problems either in infancy or during childhood. While for some these problems may be mild, for others, these problems may be chronic to the extent of affecting their day to day lives. Mild health problems do not affect the development and lives of the affected children.

By definition, chronic illnesses are health problems that persist for more than three months and have a negative effect on the development and activities of the affected child. Kids chronic illnesses are characterized by frequent hospitalization and comprehensive medical care.

Common chronic illnesses suffered by kids

Congenital heart problems

kid sickThe heart’s structure causes These problems. It is normally present immediately after birth. Majorly involves valves and walls of the heart and the veins and arteries located near the heart. There is disruption of the normal blood flow through the heart resulting in problems in breathing, fatigue, and cyanosis.

Asthma

Asthma involves the airways in the lungs. The airways’ (also called bronchial tubes) major function is to facilitate movement of air in and out of the lungs. Asthma causes inflammation of the airways resulting in difficulty in movement of air in and out of the lungs. In children, millions are suffering from asthma before they are five years old.

Asthma is characterized by wheezing, coughing, shortness of breath and the tightness of the chest. Asthma has no cure but if it is diagnosed correctly, it can be managed well.

Cerebral palsy

This refers to the loss of motor function as a result of brain damage. Probable causes of brain damage are an injury to the brain or abnormal development of the brain. This abnormal development of the brain may occur before, during or immediately after birth.

Cerebral palsy normally affects the muscle tone, coordination, control, and posture. Further to this, motor functioning is also affected. The major symptoms are delays in growth and development milestones. Cerebral palsy has no cure, but it can be managed.

Diabetes

sick kidsThe type of diabetes that was common in children was type 1. This type that affected children was called juvenile diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is caused by the pancreas not being able to make insulin. Insulin helps sugar or glucose to get into the cells hence giving person energy. When there is no insulin, there is a lot of sugar in the blood.

In the recent past, more children are being affected by type 2 diabetes. Type 2 diabetes majorly used to affect adults. Children are being affected because they are obese. Family history can also be a cause of type 2 diabetes. In terms of treatment, children suffering from type 1diabetes may have to take insulin while type 2 diabetes is managed by dieting and exercising.

Sickle cell disease

This is a blood disorder that is inherited and is characterized by the hemoglobin being defective. The hemoglobin is a protein in the red blood cells. This protein helps to carry oxygen to the body tissues. Children with sickle cell diseases are normally anemic, they have acute chest syndrome and have to yellow of the skin (jaundice).
